Double and small double mattresses

Double mattresses are the most popular size in UK bedrooms, and the small double is a clever alternative for compact rooms. This collection covers both, in memory foam, pocket sprung and hybrid constructions, so you can match the mattress to the way you sleep rather than settle for whatever fits.

Double or small double?

A small double measures 120 x 190 cm (4ft) and gives a single sleeper plenty of room, or a couple a snug fit. A standard double measures 135 x 190 cm (4ft 6in) and is the usual choice for two adults who do not need king-size space. If the room is large enough, a king size mattress adds about 15 cm of width, which makes a real difference for couples.

Sharing a bed

If you share, think about motion transfer and comfort differences. Memory foam isolates movement well, while pocket springs give more bounce and airflow. A hybrid splits the difference. Heavier or very different sleepers may want a firmer feel, so see orthopaedic and firm mattresses.

Measure twice

Measure the inner dimensions of your bed frame, not the outside, and allow for the mattress depth if your bed has a headboard or footboard. Divan bases and ottoman beds can be slightly different from standard sizes, so check yours.
